What to expect of the RAK-demo

Swedish Tågkompaniet AB (TKAB) uses a system for communication with and for people in the field called Buddy 2.0. The system consists of both robust apps on smartphones and Web-based services for the office.
Komips 2.0 software is built in such way that events and messages are stored locally. This way, communication remains available even when you're without Internet access. Read more here.
RAK (Rail App Kiosk) is based on the initiative of the Swedish Transport Administration's IT strategists and can be seen as a further development of Buddy 2.0. Read more here.
RVM is an interface where we see the information that the train's main computer (VCU) exposes in a service interface. Here the VCU outputs all the error codes that are presented to the driver. Equipment that EuroMaint Rail has installed interprets these messages and sends them to the server to see historically when and where these messages were generated in the VCU. These messages are created to help ensure proper operation of the vehicle. There are thousands of different types of messages.
Some error messages such as F3148: "Main switch has opened due to error" refers to the main switch of the vehicle having been opened without a verified approval to open.
This error can occur in various cases, either due to problems on the vehicle or to the pantograph affected by external factors that cause a drop of current. We can, in the latter scenario, assume that the current collector possibly takes a serious hit so that it loses contact briefly.
However, it requires more damage for this error message to be generated. Electrical changes such as these are only an indication to the control and regulation systems in the vehicles.
If the error message F3148, however, takes place in the same geographic location 2 times, you can most likely assume that it is an external factor that created the error.
Based on the example above we can see that it is possible to measure a variety of things that "chatter" about equipment and the infrastructure, but there are no sensors on these vehicles today to facilitate that purpose. To discover when and where the current collector receives less powerful blows, one could for example measure air flow in the system that keeps the pantograph up, gyro forces exerted by an impact, or electrical changes associated with contact problems, etc. All this is just one of several examples of further enhancement.
